COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) ? Missouri coach Frank Haith said Monday that he is fully cooperating with the NCAA in the latest round of trouble at the University of Miami, his home for seven years before taking over the Tigers this season.

The Hurricanes declared center Reggie Johnson ineligible over the weekend, saying his family received impermissible travel benefits from an unidentified member of Miami's staff when Haith was in charge of the program.

Miami has asked the NCAA to reinstate Johnson, and said the player wasn't aware of the possible NCAA violation and didn't directly receive anything. A written statement issued by Miami said that Johnson's "family was told (the extra benefits) were permissible by that member of the former basketball coaching staff."

On Monday, Haith declined to directly answer a question about the latest allegations to rock Miami, even as he offered sympathy for his former player and tried to steer their conversation back to his new school.

"We're doing some great things here at Missouri," he said. "We're cooperating with the NCAA fully. I'll just be glad when this thing's over with."

Haith called Johnson's suspension with three regular season games remaining "disappointing."

"Reggie is a wonderful young man, and you hate to see anyone have their career delayed." Haith said. "It's tough. I feel bad for him and his family, and I know he'll get through it, though."

Despite losing forward Laurence Bowers to a season-ending knee injury before the first game and inheriting just seven scholarship players, Haith has drawn rave reviews in his first season in Columbia. No. 7 Missouri (25-4, 12-4 Big 12) remains poised for a high NCAA tournament seed even after an 87-86 overtime loss at Kansas over the weekend.

Questions about his off-court conduct have dogged Haith since soon after his arrival nearly 11 months ago

A former Hurricanes booster, Nevin Shapiro, told Yahoo Sports that Haith approved a $10,000 payment to then-Miami recruit DeQuan Jones. Haith has denied that allegation, and Jones has since been cleared to play by Miami after initially being sidelined this season.

Miami said the improper travel benefits tied to Johnson were discovered as part of the "ongoing joint" inquiry by the school and the NCAA after Shapiro's claims of providing cash, cars, prostitutes and other impermissible benefits to 72 Miami football players and other athletes between 2002 and 2010 with the knowledge of at least six coaches and as many as 10 athletic department employees overall. Shapiro has not been linked to the current situation involving Johnson.

Missouri athletic director Mike Alden, who highlighted Haith's high character when the new coach was introduced in Columbia, declined an interview request through a school spokesman. Alden has previously offered qualified support of Haith but has emphasized the importance of allowing the NCAA investigation to fully unfold.

Haith reiterated to reporters that he was restricted from publicly discussing his former player at Miami.

"I'm not allowed to talk about anything to do with that in terms of my involvement," he said. "I'm doing everything the NCAA asks me to do."

Miami coach Jim Larranaga said Johnson can still practice with the team until the situation is resolved. Miami plays at North Carolina State on Wednesday.

"Hopefully we'll get Reggie back soon," Larranaga said. "He has been very upbeat, working hard and preparing himself for the time he will be available to us again."

Bank of Japan Keeping an Eye on Easing's Effect on Crude-Oil Prices

Bank of Japan Gov. Masaaki Shirakawa said on Saturday policy makers are closely watching the impact of looser monetary policy on crude-oil prices.

Along with the European Central Bank and the U.S. Federal Reserve, the Bank of Japan is taking unconventional steps to boost the economy. For examples, it boosted asset purchases by 10 trillion yen on Feb. 14, and it pledged to keep ultraeasy policy until a 1 percent inflation goal is in sight.

Canadian sled dog killings prompt new rules

The government of British Columbia, Canada has published new regulations governing the handling of sled dogs ? a move prompted by a grisly 2010 case?in which a tourism company near Whistler killed as many as 100 animals that become "surplus," amid slumping business.

The Sled Dog Code of Practice is?a step ? a small one, according to critics ? toward addressing problems in?competitive and entertainment dog sledding that is mostly unseen.

"The problem with this whole issue is these (breeding and training) operations are out of the public eye," said Debra Probert, executive director of the Vancouver Humane Society. "People see the dogs in public, but they don?t see what goes on behind the scenes."

The sled dog slaughter came to light only when?one of the employees of Howling Dog Tours Whistler Ltd.?who were charged with killing the dogs?by shooting them and slitting their throats?applied for?compensation from the Workers? Compensation Board of British Columbia because he said he was suffering trauma from the task. The WorkSafeBC document explaining the decision to approve the compensation was leaked, making incident?public?in gruesome detail.

Animal rights critics have long criticized?major dog sled races ? especially the 1,100-mile Iditarod across Alaska, which?begins March 3. Mushers are adamant that dogs love the work, that they?are bred to do it, and that no one loves the dogs more than they do. But critics say pushing the dogs to run 100 miles a day for two weeks is brutal. One or more dogs die in the race?nearly every year, despite the volunteer veterinarians who attend to the animals.

The new British Columbia regulations are primarily?focused on the breeding, training, transportation and euthanizing of the animals. They spell out requirements for pens and tethers, exercise, socializing, grooming and nail care. And they say that euthanizing should not be a means of culling or population control.

The standards disappointed?some animal advocates, including the Vancouver Humane Society, which had advocated?banning sled dog racing.

And?some were outraged that the regulations spell out how sled dog?owners should euthanize dogs if they cannot race anymore and can't be placed in a new home. A diagram illustrates the proper way to?position a gun at?a?dog?s head to ensure a clean kill.

The Humane Society's Probert said that in any case the regulations and standards ?have no teeth? because no resources were allotted for their enforcement.

Nonetheless, the British Columbia regulations move the province ahead of other Canadian jurisdictions, where no specific regulations exist.

Within the United States, Alaska currently has among the weakest legal protections for animals, with only a few lines in state law that require "minimum conditions" for "adequate" nutrition and care. ?

Just last month, an Alaska?court found a sled dog breeder guilty of cruelty to animals after local authorities found 19 dead dogs and 168 more severely malnourished at his operation in Willow. Frank Rich?was sentenced to 180 after pleading guilty to two counts of animal cruelty.

A task force has just started formulating standards to elaborate on the law.

"The challenge is to make them broad enough to encompass all sorts of dog lifestyles," including athletes like sled dogs, said Jay Fuller, veterinarian for the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. "We?d like to make clear standards for what is acceptable."?

There is no question of barring dog sledding, which is protected by state law, he said.

?Any regulations we adopt have to be consistent with state law, and the law says (the competitions) are OK,??Fuller said.

"What I hope is that there will be a universal standard of care for all dogs," said Maureen O?Nell, executive director of the Alaska Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals, who is taking part in the meetings. She said?that?sled dogs are a particularly sensitive case, and some would like to create special rules for them.

"The mushers are a strong community and I think there has been hesitation to what might somehow be perceived as anti-mushing,? she said.

After the dog?slaughter case in British Columbia, which emerged shortly after Whistler hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics, the dog sledding business took a hit.

"When the incident occurred ? it was a black eye not only for dog sledding but for Whistler," said Craig Beattie, general manager of Canadian Snowmobile, a Whistler company that provides outdoor adventures, including dogsledding tours. In order to reassure customers, he opened up his company's kennels to them and promised them?full refunds if they felt there was anything amiss.

He said the standards mandated by the government were already in place for their sled dogs, and he said he?hopes they will be enforced elsewhere.

"I think it will be way better for the animals, and for the people," said Beattie. "Obviously, the negativity will decrease toward the dog sledding."

Did you know that we are bless to have a true missionary in our midst? No he is not off in Kenya or the jungles of the Amazon, but resides here in the U.S. It is our very own SplashFalcon. A man whom I have met personally and have a tremendously deep respect for.

Who are you?

Knoxville TN at the University of Tennessee and other local smaller colleges in town.

Why did you choose SplashFalcon, I mean come on was BrightOrange taken?

I did look for Tennessee Vol type gamer tag but I couldn?t think of one that worked for me. I was a Scout Life guard at Boy Scout camp and taught Lifesaving merit badge for 5 summers. One year a comic book movie entitled Flash Gordon hit the theaters and Queen did a song on the sound track. Each staff member was given a made up Super Hero name. I received a parody name from Flash Gordon to Splash Jordan. The Queen lyrics were rewritten and the refrain sung in same tune ? Splash! ah ah ? Savior of the waterfront! Splash! ah ah He?ll save everyone of us!

Anyway, my Boy Scout nick name was Splash. So on xbox live Splash of course was already taken and I didn?t want to add a number to it so with the help of xbox live suggestions I added falcon because I always thought falcons were pretty cool.

Who among the gaming community have you met in real life?

I have a full gamertag list and about 75% I?ve met at some point in real life. About 1/3 of my list I know in around town and on the college campus. The around town guys were old guys like me that I used to game with at a bi-weekly LAN party at my neighbors house during H2 H3 days. The rest are students that I know through my ministry at UT. I?ve have attended 3 LAN parties from several gaming communities and met a bunch of gamers there. Thanks to summer mission travels I?ve met several GBG related gamers and guests to the GBG site (and I hope I don?t forget someone):

Who among those you have NOT met would you really like to meet?

Of course everyone! Hopefully, I?ll get closer to my goal at the East Coast LAN! I hope to meet Red Baron at a national Cru event. I was really close to meeting No False Gods when he was in Mississippi and Kingko when I was out in Oregon. The west Tennessee guys have invited me over too. Someday.

When did you start playing video games?

As a kid, I started with a Mattel Electronics football hand held game with LED lights simulating football players. In high school, along with a crude home consol version of Pong, I plugged a lot of quarters in machines at the local arcades and played Space Invaders and Galaga. There was a long period of time of not really playing any video games until I bought my second PC in the mid-nineties when I played Total Annihilation at a LAN party with a bunch of college students from my Bible Study. That?s when I first realized the video gaming is more fun with friends and could also be used as a ministry tool.

What is your favorite video game EVER!

Halo 2 is what started it all. It was the first consol game I played. My brother, cookinwidbutter, talked me into hanging out with him one night playing H2 co-op. I was hooked. That week I took my Christmas money and I bought an original xbox, Halo 2, and signed up my GT SplashFalcon on xbox live. I connected with mulitple LAN parties in my hometown with a bunch of church friends. I joined several Gaming communities online, which is how I met TruthPastor and many other friends. Through those connections, I traveled to LAN parties in St Louis, Memphis, and Ohio. And? as a 40 year dad, It gave me a chance to connect to and reach out to students in the dorms that may not initially come to a Bible study.

Do you prefer to have vibration ON or OFF on your controller?

One of our gaming friends advised me to turn off vibration because my ?aiming would be better? and I would ?instantly have a better k/d.? So I did but my k/d is still the same. lol Sometimes I?ll turn it on for driving games or playing a campaign.

If you had a choice to Drive the Warthog or be the Gunner, which would you choose?

Driver.
(One of my funniest nights of Halo is TruthPastor teaching me how to drive a Warthog. I was like a sixteen year old getting his drivers license.)

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I always told my parents that I wanted to be a writer.

At what age did you recognize the need for Jesus as your Savior?

At nine years old, I prayed a prayer every night, ?Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I die before I wake, I pray thee Lord, my soul do take.? It was the scariest prayer because after I prayed I was convinced I would die that night and wondered if God would really take my soul. It was also at that time my grandparent took me to church and I went to Vacation Bible School. I remember hearing for the first time that it wasn?t a prayer that saved me but my trust in the Savior. That night I prayed a different prayer of asking for forgiveness and trusting in Jesus and inviting him into my life. I remember opening my eyes and whispering, ?He did it! I?m His.? I had the best night?s sleep ever.

What do you do for a living?

I?m a full time staff member/missionary with Campus Crusade for Christ. Basically, I?m a campus minister to college students.

Full Time? What does it mean to be a ?full time staff member/missionary with Campus Crusade for Christ??

I guess I should say it?s my full time vocational job, my career. I?m employed by Campus Crusade for Christ.

What is it you do for Campus Crusade?

I?m a full time campus minister working with college students at The University of Tennessee and local campuses. I trust the Lord to lead me to students that He is working in their hearts and lives.
I have the privilege of sharing the gospel, leading Bible studies, and training students to do the same. We call it win, build, and send. Win students to Christ, Build them up in their faith, and train them and Send them out to Win, Build, and Send.

Who is in your family?

I have a family of five. Carol and I went on our first date on a summer mission trip in Thailand over 23 years ago. Later we developed a deep friendship on a year long mission trip in the former Yugoslavia. Carol has been my loving wife and ministry partner for 18 years. I have a daughter (17) and two sons (15,12).

I know you primarily work with students on the campuses in the United States but we also learned about you meeting your wife in Thailand and Developing a friendship in Belgrade. Where else has your ministry with students taken you outside the US?

My heart is for the world and I feel the Lord has me here in the US to cast vision to our US for needs of the students of the world. I?ve been to Thailand and Belgrade, Serbia for sure. Mexico, Bolivia, Argentina, Hungary, Bulgaria, Middle East, India, Germany, Czech Republic and Slovakia. I?ve not made it to Africa yet? maybe someday.

What is the greatest miracle you have seen God do in your life?

I guess the greatest personal miracle was that God pursued me. I was reached out to as a college student. Though I knew Christ I wasn?t walking with Him. I started attending a Bible Student on my floor that I later found out was a Campus Crusade for Christ Bible study. As a result, I prayed a repentant/rededication type prayer and started the journey to turn every area of my life over to the Lord. Knowing Him is a miracle and is still a journey even today but everything about my life changed that day as a college student.

Why reach college students? How would you describe your effect on the students at UT?

I hope my greatest contribution is to help students know and love Jesus better. I believe that college students are the future leaders of our communities and world. Students make three foundational decisions at their age. Master, Mate, Mission. Who or what will their master will be ? the world, materialism, themselves, etc. or God? What type of person do they want to spend the rest of their life with? And what is God?s plan, purpose, or mission for their lives? I enjoy walking through this significant live stage with students. My dream is that God would use these students greatly as leaders in our communities, schools, churches, businesses, government, and the world.

So how have you used video games as a means of outreach with your ministry?

Years ago, the very first night of a fall semester kick-off Bible study the guys invited me up to play Halo 2 with them. I told them I played a little and I would love to join them. We had about 10-12 guys with 2 boxes linked together and just passing around controllers. Remember, this was the first time I had really met any of them. The first game I played, I was sitting across the dorm room trying seeing and play on a 13inch TV. I was like 4 and 15 K/D. They were gracious and thought, ?Yeah, the old guy can?t play, but it?s nice that he?s hanging out with us.? A few games later they gave me the controller again and I moved closer to the TV. In that sniper game and I went 25/2. Instantly, I was in.

For years, at least once a semester, I?ll host a LAN party at my house. All the guys involved in my discipleship group can bring their Bible study guys and friends as an outreach and play games from 9pm-4am. It gives them a chance to hang and connect with people that may not normally come to an outreach event. Some days, I?ve even carried a controller in my book bag on campus so I can play a few games with contacts that I meet in the dorms.

What can we do to pray for you and your ministry through Campus Crusade?

Pray that I would of course keep Christ at the center and not rely on my own human efforts. I?ve been working with students for 25 years now and 3 more as a student volunteer. I want to see each day as a fresh leading of His work through me.

What can GBG members do to support you?

First, pray. As I mentioned this above I need people to join with me to lift our ministry in prayer.

Second is financial support. The way Campus Crusade for Christ is set up is that we (or my individual family) trusts the Lord to provide all of our support needs: all Income, taxes, Health benefits, etc through individuals. There are no central funds that CCC provides. Included in this support are reimbursable ministry needs like something as small as taking a student out to lunch or buying someone a Bible and up to as big a personal ministry expenses when I take a group of students on a mission project. I view these gifts not as gifts to me but gifts to the Lord.

I?ve been with this ministry now for 25 years and the Lord has always provided. The level of giving has been variable at times but God has always blessed us and given us our daily bread. Recently, we did have a life long donor have to cut back on their support due issues with the economy and I?m in a mode of trusting the Lord for new support.

Welcome back for another profile spotlight!? This time I thought I would check in with a fellow tech pioneer and organic technology consultant Adria Richards.? LDC: So Adria let?s start off with? where you went? to school?

AR: I started with a major in psychology at the local college in Minneapolis. ?I knew I wanted to help people and make a difference in the world. ?My mother had her master?s in sociology so I thought I?d follow that path.

I took computer 101 but it was so basic at the time that I couldn?t understand how anyone would want to learn more about input devices, motherboards and memory. ?I had the opportunity to become a Windows 98 beta tester and my whole view on technology changed. ?My mother had signed me up for to be a beta tester because she loved coupons and deals and wasn?t going to pass up receiving a $200 software license. ?In order to participate in the program, the letter I received from Microsoft indicated I would need to increase the hard drive space and speed of the CD-rom in the old hand-me-down NCR computer I had. ?I immediately went to work figuring out how I would get this done and picked up my first computer book, ?Upgrading and Repairing PC?s? the 8th Edition by Que. ?Not only did it help me make the necessary upgrades to my computer, it also helped me land my first real tech job at Geekquad! ?Back then, Geeksquad would give you a written test and one of the questions was, ?What does ?fdisk /mbr do?? and I was able to explain that it formatted the master boot record to wipe out viruses and other unwanted programs.

I realized the world was changing and this ?Internet? thing was going to be big. ?I wanted to become a network administrator. ?As I looked around the post secondary landscape, I realized I could not get the training I needed to accomplish this goal. ?I dropped out of school and began working on getting IT certifications and real world job experience. ?By 2000, I?d passed the A+?certification?test and set my next certification goals on becoming an MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator). ?I achieved this in 2005.

LDC: How did you get into training?

AR: When you solve technology problems, a large aspect of that is making sure the problem doesn?t happen again. ?When working with end users, this means explaining to them how their actions (or lack of action) contributed to the problem and educating them on what to do next time. ?From the very beginning in my technology career, I began to receive recognition for how I dealt with people. ?As time went on, the compliments, notes of appreciation and feedback continued. ?I enjoyed helping people have that, ?Ah ha!? moment with technology and as I became more experienced in network administration, website development and IT projects, I realized how much I enjoyed that facetime with customers.

My first opportunity to do in-classroom training was 2007. ?A friend of mine was going on vacation and had been doing a series of classes at the local St. Paul Continuing Education program. ?He asked me to cover his classes which included, Intro to Windows XP, Microsoft Excel and Introduction to Online Research. ?I researched adult education, technical training strategies and went to work creating a?curriculum. ?Since I?d worked for several years at a market research company, I folded in surveys as a part of the outline to ensure I gathered feedback from students. ?I had a blast and began looking for more technical training opportunities. ?It wasn?t long before I spotted a position at the Minneapolis Urban League. ?They were looking for an A+ certification instructor to teach a 12 week course. ?I applied, prepared a proposal and landed the position. ?Again I created the curriculum, delivered it, actively engaged the students and staff for feedback, built an intranet using WordPress to share coursework and class updates.

I then moved into making screencast tutorials for clients, again with very positive feedback. ?Eventually, I began uploading these videos to YouTube and again, received?compliments, questions and consulting inquiries.

Lawyers: cocaine on capsized cruise captain's hair

ROME (AP) ? Experts and lawyers representing survivors of the capsized Costa Concordia cruise ship said Saturday that traces of cocaine were found on a sample of the ship captain's hair.

The results found by a court-appointed expert are "very strange," spokesman Stefano Zerbi told The Associated Press by telephone. The group is raising the possibility that the samples "more than anything else, had been badly preserved and contamination might have resulted," Zerbi said.

Prosecutors are investigating Schettino for alleged manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning his ship before all passengers and crew were evacuated. Thirty-two people are believed to have perished, including 15 whose bodies have not been found.

A statement on Codacons' website also contended that Schettino had told investigators he had taken tranquilizers but that no traces of that medication were found in either the hair or the urine.

Codacons said its experts are contending that the container holding the urine sample wasn't properly sealed. It said the results as they stand indicate a "strange, passive contamination", in which cocaine somehow got onto Schettino's hair even though he wasn't using the drug.

The prosecutor's office in Grosseto, Tuscany, was closed Saturday, as was the law office of the attorney defending Schettino, who is under house arrest in his home near Naples.

The consumer group on Friday also asked prosecutors to order DNA testing of the samples to confirm they are indeed those of Schettino, to eliminate the possibilities the samples were accidentally mislabeled or switched.

It is also seeking clarification as to which hair strands were taken, and whether they were snipped at the roots. Zerbi said the samples were taken on Jan. 17, a few days after the accident.

The Concordia's hull was speared by the reef after the ship cruised close to the island of Giglio in what many contend was a publicity stunt. Schettino has contended that the reef was not on maritime maps, but the reef is well known to sailors. He also insisted he didn't abandon the cruise liner.

The Concordia was carrying some 4,200 passengers and crew on a week's cruise on its standard route when it crashed into the reef during dinner a couple of hours after leaving an Italian port.

The boat started badly listing to one side almost immediately, causing passengers to panic and try to scramble aboard lifeboats. But the evacuation wasn't ordered until about an hour later, and some passengers jumped overboard to swim to Giglio when several of the lifeboats couldn't be deployed because of the ship's tilt.

Divers have been searching sections of the wreckage where some of the missing were last seen in hopes that more bodies can be recovered. After much delay, in great part because of stormy weather, pumping operations have been under way for a week to remove some 500,000 gallons of fuel from the ship's tanks.

The Concordia is lying on its side close to the port of Giglio, which is part of a protected Tuscan archipelago in pristine waters famed for whales, dolphins, fish and coral.

Switching camps: Gray Maynard?s move from Xtreme Couture to AKA

With the massive growth of MMA, the stakes have gone through the roof for fighters in the UFC. Between improved salaries, discretionary bonuses, appearance fees and marketing deals, the difference between a champion and a contender can be staggering.

"These guys are making millions of dollar in every fight. If Gray Maynard was the champion right now, he'd be a millionaire. [...] He's not. He lost a lot of money by losing that fight," Frank Trigg said on "The MMA Insiders Show" on Las Vegas' ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM.

Following a loss to Frank Edgar at UFC 136, Maynard felt that sting. He'd come so close, but in the end, Edgar has the belt and the big assignments.

Maynard, faced with climbing back up the ladder, felt it was time for a change. A Las Vegas mainstay since 2006, he left Xtreme Couture and moved to American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Ca. But it wasn't simply about freshening things up.

"Gray just was not prepared. It was really one of those deals where a coach within his staff just would not pay attention any other coaches. He was getting really upset if any other coach tried to explain to him 'hey, this is how hard I'm going to push Gray in my session. You need to back off in your session so he can recover," said Trigg, a former trainer partner of Maynard's at Xtreme Couture. "[Maynard] wasn't prepared. It's ultimately up to one coach that didn't pay attention."

John Gunderson, another former teammate of Maynard's in Sin City, echoed the same sentiment about Maynard being less than prepped for the biggest fight of his life."The last fight Gray wasn't mentally prepared or physically prepared for that fight. I don't think he trained hard enough and he knows that. I think if Gray really put the time in and the work in, Gray could finish him," Gunderson said.

Maynard made to decision to extricate himself from the drama well before the Edgar fight took place.

"We knew six weeks before the fight," Trigg said. "Gray said 'look win, lose or draw, this is my last fight. I'm out of here. I gotta leave Xtreme Couture."

Randy Couture, who was away from the gym for much of the early part of 2011, returned to find a big mess and one of his top fighters leaving. Couture cleaned house with coaches Gil Martinez and Ron Frazier moving elsewhere.

Martinez, with a boxing background, was Maynard's main coach. Whether it was his fault or not that Maynard underachieved, it's pretty clear that the former Michigan State wrestler was way too boxing-centric in his fights against Edgar.

It sounds like Maynard is never going to make the mistake of putting his eggs all in one basket.

"He's not officially joining AKA, he's going up there to train. We've all come to the realization that you can't be in one spot anymore," Trigg said. "If you want to be a great MMA fighter, you have to go down and train with Jose Aldo in Brazil. [...] You've got to go to different places. That's why GSP got so good so quickly. He didn't stay in Montreal. Gray has realized that's what he has to do."

Here's hoping the change allows Maynard to take things to the next level. He may still be the best guy in the world at lightweight, but with all the competition out there at 155 pounds, he's probably got a long climb back up the ladder.
