New Toshiba Laptops, Ultrabooks for Windows 8 Unveiled
In addition to its new touch screen units designed with Windows 8 in mind, Toshiba has also unveiled at IFA today four new systems of varying sizes and features optimized for Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 operating system. Designed to be Toshiba's mainstream Windows 8 system, the Satellite P845t is a souped-up, Windows 8-ready version of the Satellite P845. Users can opt for a 500GB HDD with a 32GB SSD cache or a 256GB SSD. Regardless of which configuration users choose, the U845W features three USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, and a memory card slot. Like all other systems in Toshiba's new lineup, there's Desktop Assist and Toshiba Central included to ostensibly makes the user experience easier. Pricing for the new U845W is expected to be on par with that of the current model.
Toshiba Satellite U945
The Toshiba Satellite U945, meanwhile, is set to replace the Satellite U845. Sporting an all-plastic construction that weighs less than four pounds and measures .78 inch in thickness, it occupies the affordable-ultrabook niche in Toshiba's new lineup, with an as-of-yet undetermined price slated to cost roughly fifty dollars less than comparable systems. The U945 sports a 14-inch LED display, and can be configured with a third-generation Intel Core i3 or i5 processor. Rounding out the new lineup is the Toshiba Satellite S955, an all-purpose desktop replacement. With its 15.6-inch display, the S955 sports the largest screen of the group. While it's also the bulkiest system in the lineup, the five-pound S955 nonetheless sports a thin profile that measures just under an inch in thickness. As an added aesthetic flourish, its brushed aluminum chassis comes in an Ice Blue finish. Typical of its class, the S955 comes equipped with a full-size keyboard, numeric pad, and a built-in DVD drive. Under the hood, it can be configured with either an AMD A8 or third-generation Intel Core i5 processor, up to 8GB RAM, and a hard drive capacity of up to 750GB. The S955 also sports dual USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port, and an HDMI port.
All systems are set to launch in conjunction with Windows 8 on October 26, but may be displayed in retail stores as early as October 12.

Edifier Prisma e3350BT 2.1 Bluetooth Audio System
As Bluetooth wireless audio streaming continues to increase its presence in portable speaker docks and headphones, it's now finding its way into less likely areas, such as speaker systems intended for computers. Design
The sleek 2.1 Prisma speaker system comes in white, silver, or, like our model, black, with the two matte plastic satellite speaker frames measuring 9.2 by 1.8 by 4.7 inches. On the front panels, cloth speaker grilles hide a 2.75-inch mid-range driver and a 0.75-inch silk dome tweeter on each speaker. The 30-watt subwoofer features a 5-inch, downward-firing driver. It features the same matte black plastic and vaguely-triangular theme, measuring 7.83 by 9.76 by 11.57 inches, with an under-lit Power button that mimics the status lighting of the under-lit Volume knob on the wired remote.
The sub is the heart of the system with the wired controller, the two satellite speakers, the power supply, and an optional wired 3.5mm input all connected to its rear panel. Unfortunately, all these cables can be a bit cumbersome, and some, like the cable that connects to both satellites, seem a bit short if you wish to keep the sub on the floor and out of sight. Having the power button on the floor-sitting subwoofer is also a bit annoying.
The connected controller has a large metallic Volume dial, but no Power button or track navigation buttons. The Bass level control is hidden on the back of the sub?it's not adjustable from the remote itself. Despite having basically no purpose other than adjusting the volume, the control manages to redeem itself with the inclusion of an extra 3.5mm aux input and a headphone jack. It seems, however, that all of these things could easily have been placed on one of the satellite speakers without making the design hideous, thus eliminating the need for the wired controller altogether and making the entire system a bit more manageable. Edifier, however visually alluring its products may be, is no stranger to odd design choices?the recently reviewed Edifier Spinnaker ?has an annoying cable connection port that makes set up a little frustrating.
The Prisma is armed with Bluetooth version 2.1+EDR, and supports the A2DP codec. Pairing with a Bluetooth sound source is a quick and simple process, and like most Bluetooth systems, the range of the speakers is roughly 30 feet.
Performance
At top volumes, the Prisma 2.1 system has some trouble handling tracks with really deep bass, like the Knife's "Silent Shout." The issue, however, is not really about distortion?the signal sounds mostly clean. The problem is the actual vibrations from the deep bass, which make the subwoofer's frame rattle and sound as?if?it were distorting heavily. This seems to only occur at top volumes, however, and only on tracks with serious low end (The Edifier Spinnaker also suffers from this issue.) At reasonable volumes, the Prisma conveys most tracks with a subtle low-end presence. It is neither over-the-top nor anemic, even when the bass level is maxed out on the sub.
This balanced approach benefits most musical genres. On classical tracks like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," the speakers let the mid and high frequencies shine, with an emphasis on clarity. The sub's presence is subtle, even at maximum bass level, lending a bit of depth to the brass, large percussion, and lower register strings. The system's overall focus is skewed towards the mid and high range instruments, allowing for nice clarity and texture in the higher strings and wooden percussion hits.
Bill Callahan's vocals on his latest record,?Apocalypse, are delivered with a smooth low-end presence, paired with a crisp edge in the high-mids, while the kick drum has a nice, punchy presence. This has as much to do with the subwoofer's low-end boost as it does the satellites' pleasing mid-range clarity, resulting in a lively bass drum pedal attack followed by a pleasantly rounded-out resonance.
This same mid range clarity creates a ferocious sound when applied to the attack of the thumping beat on Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild," which also benefits from the sub's presence, but again, in a subtle way. This is more of a flat response system that many 2.1 speaker systems tend to be?and it is certainly not a system for bass fiends.
For $130, the Prisma delivers a clean sound at moderate volumes, with just enough low-end to please. Its Bluetooth streaming is solid, and it's hard to discern much of a difference between the wireless stream and a wired signal from the same sound source, though sometimes the wired signal seems to provide a little more deep bass presence.The annoying design choices and rattling sub may keep the Prisma from greatness, but it's still a solid choice in this price range.
If you're not hooked on a wireless system, the $170 Harman Kardon SoundSticks III, an Editors' Choice, is another visually pleasing 2.1-channel speaker system that offers a bit more thump from the subwoofer and similar clarity in the high frequencies. If Bluetooth is your main priority, but you'd prefer a docking system that can charge your iPod or iPhone, as well, the JBL OnBeat Xtreme ?is another Editors' Choice, but it is significantly more expensive. Finally, if all of these suggestions are out of your range and you're looking for a more affordable PC speaker system, the Energy Power EM-2.1 ?is not wireless, but it's about as affordable as speakers get while maintaining any sense of musical quality.

"Richard III is a charismatic figure who attracts tremendous interest, partly because he has been so much maligned in past centuries, and partly because he occupies a pivotal place in English history," Langley said.
"The continuing interest in Richard means that many fables have grown up around his grave." Langley said, ?adding that some far-fetched tales include that the bones were thrown into the river Soar. [ The Science of Death: 10 Tales from the Crypt ]
"Other fables, equally discredited, claimed that his coffin was used as a horse-trough," Langley said.
After his death, the king was stripped and brought to Leicester, where he was buried in the church of the Franciscan Friary, known as the Greyfriars. The location of Greyfriars was eventually lost to history.?
"The big question for us is determining the whereabouts of the church on the site and also where in the church the body was buried," University of Leicester archaeologist Richard Buckley said in a statement. "Although in many ways finding the remains of the king is a long-shot, it is a challenge we shall undertake enthusiastically. There is certainly potential for the discovery of burials within the area, based on previous discoveries and the postulated position of the church."
The search begins on Aug. 25. If remains that could be Richard III are found, they will be subject to DNA analysis at the University of Leicester.

Auction for sacred South Dakota land canceled
SIOUX FALLS, S.D.?? The planned auction of nearly 2,000 acres of land in South Dakota's picturesque Black Hills that is considered sacred by American Indian tribes has been canceled, though it wasn't immediately clear why.
Iowa-based Brock Auction Co. planned to auction five tracts of land owned by Leonard and Margaret Reynolds on Saturday. But a message on the auction house's website Thursday said it has been canceled at the land owners' direction. The auction house and Margaret Reynolds declined to comment.
Tribes of the Great Sioux Nation consider the site key to their creation story and are trying to purchase it because they fear new owners would develop the land, which they call Pe' Sla. The property, which spans about 1,942 acres of pristine prairie grass, is the only sacred site on private land currently outside Sioux control.

Rosebud Sioux Tribe spokesman Alfred Walking Bull said he didn't know the auction had been canceled when contacted Thursday. His tribe, whose reservation is among the closest to the land, had agreed to allocate $1.3 million toward trying purchasing the property, though tribal officials have said they feared the selling price could be between $6 million and $10 million.
Ruth Hopkins, who helps run a website where about 5,000 people have donated more than $250,000 to help the tribes purchase the land, said she didn't know why the auction was called off. U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs spokeswoman Nedra Darling said she also was not aware the auction had been canceled and had no comment.
A United Nations fact finder had urged federal, state and local officials to consult with American Indians ahead of the auction.
Roughly 20 tribes make up the Great Sioux Nation, which was fragmented when American Indians were pushed to reservations. The tribes now span several states, including Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas and Minnesota, and Canada.
The tribes believe the Sioux people were created from the Black Hills. According to part of their spiritual tradition, Pe' Sla is where the Morning Star fell to Earth, killing seven beings that killed seven women. The Morning Star placed the souls of the women into the night sky as "The Seven Sisters," also known as the Pleiades constellation.
Tribal members hold ceremonies and rituals on the land.

New study shows intake of olive oil associated with increase in bone formation markers
Chevy Chase, MDA study to be published in the Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (JCEM) shows consumption of a Mediterranean diet enriched with olive oil for two years is associated with increased serum osteocalcin concentrations, suggesting a protective effect on bone.
Age-related bone mass loss and decreased bone strength affects women and men alike are an important determinant of osteoporosis and fracture risk. Studies have shown that the incidence of osteoporosis in Europe is lower in the Mediterranean basin. The traditional Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, with a high intake of olives and olive oil could be one of the environmental factors underlying this difference.
"The intake of olive oil has been related to the prevention of osteoporosis in experimental and in vitro models," said Jos Manuel Fernndez-Real, MD, PhD, of Hospital Dr. Josep Trueta in Girona, Spain and lead author of the study. "This is the first randomized study which demonstrates that olive oil preserves bone, at least as inferred by circulating bone markers, in humans."
The participants in this study were 127 community-dwelling men aged 55 to 80 years randomly selected from one of the Prevencion con Dieta Mediterranea (PREDIMED) study centers who had at least two years of follow-up. The PREDIMED study is a large, parallel group, randomized, controlled trial aimed to assess the effect of the Mediterranean diet on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
For this study, subjects were elderly without prior cardiovascular disease but having a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes or harboring at least three cardiovascular risk factors, namely hypertension, dyslipidemia, or a family history of premature cardiovascular disease. Participants were randomly assigned to three intervention groups: Mediterranean diet with mixed nuts, Mediterranean diet with virgin olive oil, and a low-fat diet.
Biochemical measurements of osteocalcin, glucose, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides were performed at baseline and after two year follow-up on fasting blood samples. Researchers found that only consumption of the Mediterranean diet with olive oil was associated with a significant increase in the concentrations of total osteocalcin and other bone formation markers. There were also no significant changes in serum calcium in subjects taking olive oil whereas serum calcium decreased significantly in the other two groups.
"It's important to note that circulating osteocalcin was associated with preserved insulin secretion in subjects taking olive oil," added Fernndez-Real. "Osteocalcin has also been described to increase insulin secretion in experimental models."

Other researchers who helped with the study included Mnica Bull, Jos Maria Moreno-Navarrete, Wifredo Ricart, Emilio Ros, Ramon Estruch, and Jordi Salas-Salvad of Instituto de Salud Carlos III in Madrid, Spain.

Section 114A came into force two weeks ago and broadens the scope of who can be held responsible for content published online.
Under the Act, everyone from individuals to those who administer and run online forums, blogs and hosting services can now be held liable for content published through their services, even if it is done anonymously. Any business premises which give free Wi-Fi access to customers could also be affected.
Daniel CerVentus, a web producer, said more than 60 business, including his own, have blocked their sites in protest at the changes.
?The community feels very strongly about this Act because essentially, the onus is on the owner of the site,? Mr CerVentus said. ?So it?s guilty until proven innocent which is really against freedom of speech in general.?
It is the first time that Malaysia has held an Internet Blackout Day and the concept has been adapted from similar protests in support of internet freedom in the United States and New Zealand.Internet users who visit participating websites will see a pop-up window which contains the message of the campaign. Many individual web users have changed online profile pictures and avatars to show protest messages.
The Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) said it hopes the action will urge Malaysia?s government to withdraw the amendment.
